Why I Started Chrysta's Things

Welcome to Read the Room, the heart of Chrysta's Things. Start here.

For most of my life, my work was making other people's visions feel real, building worlds so convincing you forgot someone built them at all. I loved it. But those worlds were never mine to keep. They lit up for a while, and then the set came down.

Home was the exception. Home was the one world I got to author from the studs out. And over the years, room by room, it became the place I put all the color I couldn't put anywhere else.

The rooms were always the real story

I've been doing this in private for a long time. Choosing a paint color that makes people stop in the doorway. Chasing a velvet in the exact shade of a good mood. Layering pattern until a room finally sounds like a person instead of a showroom. My homes were my studio, my experiment, and my joy. They were the place I got to be the creative instead of the one making someone else's creative happen.

For years I kept all of it to myself. Chrysta's Things is me finally deciding not to.

Color confidence is a practice, not a personality

Here's the part I most want you to hear: nobody is born knowing how to do this. Color confidence is just a handful of small, repeatable moves, the kind that turn "I could never pull that off" into "wait, I did that." I was unsure once too. These days a too-careful room makes me a little sad, like a favorite song played at half volume.

So if your walls have only ever been the safe choice, and some quiet part of you is a little bored of it, this is for you. You don't have to go all in. You just have to start somewhere small and let it surprise you.

Beautiful, and built to work

A gorgeous room that's secretly chaos doesn't feel good to live in. I know, because my brain needs real systems to relax. So everything I make here has a backbone: storage that earns its place, routines that hold up a full life, structure that happens to be nice to look at. Beautiful and functional were never a trade-off in my house. They're the entire point.

Soon, you can step inside

Here's the part I'm most excited about: these rooms aren't staying private anymore. I'm turning my spaces into places you can book and stay in, so color confidence stops being something you scroll past and becomes something you wake up inside of. You'll read about it here first. Then you'll get to live in it for a weekend.

Make yourself at home

Why any of this exists

Because a home is a story you get to tell out loud. I spent a career telling other people's. This one is mine, and more than anything, I hope it gives you the nerve to start telling yours.

Come on in. Bring the color.

See you inside, Chrysta
