Maria Sibylla Merian painted this around 1670 to 1690: a convolvulus hawk moth, its caterpillar, its chrysalis and the morning glory it feeds on, all on one page. She raised the insects herself to watch them change, at a time when plenty of people still thought moths came out of mud.
The whole sheet is here, gold border and all, in a wide shape that hangs nicely over a desk or a bed.
